Engine stop-start technology has proliferated in automatic-transmission cars as automakers try to squeeze additional efficiency from internal combustion engines, but they’ve figured out how to bring the fuel-saving feature to stick-shift cars, too. In the Porsche 718 Cayman, for instance, the engine can shut off to save fuel when the car is stopped, the gear selector is in Neutral and the clutch pedal is released. Depress the clutch to get into gear and the engine restarts.
The clutch pedal is the one that makes driving a manual car more difficult than an auto. Without going into too much detail, the clutch is essentially two metal plates that connect the engine to the drive wheels. So by pressing down on the clutch pedal, you’re disconnecting the engine from the wheels.
The manual transmission is on the endangered species list. Every year fewer and fewer cars are offered with a clutch and a shifter. Why? Americans just don’t want to be bothered with the chore of working a clutch with their left foot and shifting with their right. And sports car manufacturers are the worst offenders when it comes to quitting on the stick shift. Because the newest computer-controlled automatics can shift more quickly than any human can, engineers see the manual transmission as outdated.
