Besides the ubiquitous smartphone, lots of other stuff has become “smart” — watches, thermostats, doorbells and more. The Toyota Corolla Hatchback’s manual transmission has grown smarter, too, and it can do things that previously required plenty of practice. Downshift rev-matching is one such feature, but the car can also automatically adjust engine speed to minimize lurching during an ill-timed shift. Cars.com reviewer Brian Wong also observed that you can get the car moving on a level surface using just the clutch pedal. Combined, these characteristics make the hatchback a good choice to learn how to drive a manual.
Before practicing running the car, the novice driver must memorize the gear shift position. Also understand the technique while stepping on the clutch and brake pedals.
So why would we include a Jeep among st all this high-performance metal? Well first because the Wrangler is all new for 2018. And second because a manual transmission adds an extra dimension of fun to 4X4s. Creeping up and over boulders with a manual transmission is challenging and requires just the right shift timing, throttle, and clutch work. An automatic lets the vehicle slowly crawl over the worst trail obstacles. All the driver has to do is steer and gently apply the throttle.
